Ronin Elite Katana #127 - dragon theme

This Ronin Elite katana has been traditionally forged and laminated in the soshu kitae tradition (seven panel steel). This school was developed by the legendary Japanese smith Masamune, and combines panels of hard, medium, and soft steels. The core of the blade is formed from softer, more malleable steel giving it exceptional flexibility. A layer of slightly harder steel is bonded to each side of the core to add support. The last layers are a very hard steel bonded to the top, bottom, and both sides of the core forming the ha (cutting edge) mune (back edge) and shinogi-ji (blade flats). This form of laminar construction provided for a sword that could be sharpened to a razor edge due to the hardened steed used for the ha, but was extremely resilient to battle damage due to its softer more flexible core.

    Not the usual quality control

What initially looked like excess wax/grease from the saya, turned out to be rough grind marks along the cutting edge of the blade. It looks like someone did an amateur job of sharping the blade after it had been polished. There is also some rainbow discoloration along the edge. I'm not 100% sure what causes this (maybe different alloys working their way to the surface during heat treatment). I've only seen it once before on a Ronin Elite Scratch and Dent, which was half the price. The large fuchi gives the tsuka an axe handle size grip and it feels uncomfortable in my hands. I wish I had examined this katana more carefully upon arrival because I definitely would have addressed the issues with the blade. Lesson learned - 3.5 Stars - not the usual 5 Stars for Ronin Elites.
