Not great but also not bad-just about in the middle…
This is a new purchase. Firstly I think for the price point, this accomplishes the goal of a useable Tanto. I’m not sure you could beat it. That being said there were issues with mine. The very tip of my Kissaki is misshapen. The mouth of the Saya is extremely rough and unfinished. The Tsuka appears glued on and I cannot service the blade. The edge is not paper slicing sharp but may be fine for actual cutting. Would I have liked the above things remedied? Sure. Can I expect the to be for a sub 100 dollar price point? Not at all. My main complaint would be servicing. If I could get the Tsuka off without fear of damage, the other things wouldn’t bother me. I’d still buy another.

1060 STEEL TANTO #5
Nice blade, sharp, firm fittings, not going to slip out when worn with a katana. Fast shipping, very pleased!

DOJO PRO 1060 STEEL TANTO #5
Very good quality for the price. I had never bought anything like this before and was surprised at how nice it is for $75 total. Everything is tight and nothing has fallen off or anything after light testing. I think its cool, would recommend.

A steal at the sale price
I bought this sale-priced tanto expressly for customizing, so my criteria might be different from yours. That said, I've bought 2 tanto and 2 shinken from Ronin, and I've been perfectly happy with them. I believe these sale tanto are returns from unsatisfied customers. If so, I'm not sure why this one was returned. The blade has a bit of play in the saya, but the habaki fit is firm. The blade itself has two very minor scratches. That's it. It could be sharper and it could be polished brighter. The latter is easily fixed with some Peek/Flitz/Mother's Mag & Aluminum. I'll probably strop the edge, but that's it. Fittings are decent quality and tight. The samegawa is rayskin and well fitted. The tsuka ito could be tighter, but I'm probably going to replace it anyway. FWIW, ito on my previous Ronin purchases (including one sale-priced shinken & one sale-priced tanto) has been fairly well wrapped. As with my previous tanto review, even though fit & fittings are good, you're really buying this for the blade. You could easily pay twice as much for half as good, so for $70, you can't go wrong.

You get what you are paying for. The money went mostly into the blade, it is sharp and well put together. The tsuka and saya are made of “cheap”materials but it is to be expected at this price point.

Put all the fittings are tight with no rattle and the blade looks excellent
There was some glue residue and one of the pegs wasn’t flush and peeled up a little bit of the ray skin but overall very nice
